An underground 1950s pedestrian arcade of salmon-pink tiles, black granite columns and art-deco shopfronts that runs beneath Flinders Street, creating one of Melbourne’s most distinctive liminal and time-warp spaces. For decades it functioned as a busy commuter thoroughfare lined with independent shops, a record store, café and rotating art displays in the “Dirty Dozen” glass cases. Closed between 2022 and mid-2025 for Metro Tunnel construction, it reopened in July 2025 after careful heritage restoration. The pink tiles, columns and shopfronts were cleaned and repaired, with updated lighting and ceiling works, while the overall atmosphere remains that of a quiet, surreal, mid-century transit space.
When mostly empty, the long pink-tiled passage feels especially liminal – a transitional corridor below ground, suspended between eras.
