A 64-metre dish on a fully steerable mount, rising out of the trees near a village whose name is Tolstoukhovo, meaning “thick-eared.” Set among ordinary pasture, treelines and a low river town, the instrument is simply too large for the landscape that holds it, like a piece of deep-space hardware dropped into farmland. That mismatch of size, setting, and use is what makes this location feel dreamed: an instrument built to talk to Mars, left listening in a quiet corner of Tver Oblast.
The antenna is TNA-1500 / RT-64, built by OKB MEI as part of the Soviet deep-space network and brought into service at Kalyazin in 1992. It was meant for interplanetary links and later used for radio astronomy. It’s sister dish of the same class sits at Bear Lakes near Moscow.
Labs occupy the tower-base; the site is still a working, restricted observatory. The dish appears most atmospheric in the snow, and can easily make you feel like you have just stumbled into a sci-fi movie. It is also a megalophobe’s worst nightmare.
