Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills

LOCATION : DESCRIPTION

Enormous, nearly empty, y2k mall with vast open corridors, dead escalators, and a sense of recent abandonment that feels especially uncanny. Opened in 2005 as a $200-million showpiece, this 1.2-million-square-foot complex in Frazer Township, Pennsylvania, declined rapidly and is now one of the most documented “zombie” malls in the US. Silent food courts, empty escalators, and the y2k decor combine to create an eerie, yet nostalgic atmosphere that feels scarily like a lost childhood memory, or a collective dream we have all had – but can’t quite remember.

Key features include:

  • Huge multi-level concourses
  • Empty anchor spaces and closed store fronts
  • Deserted y2k design
