A large 1970s regional mall that has become a classic example of a quietly fading American shopping center, with long empty corridors, vacant store fronts and an intense liminal atmosphere.
Burnsville Center opened as one of the biggest enclosed malls in Minnesota, originally featured three major anchors (Sears, Dayton’s and Powers Dry Goods) and around 95 stores on opening day, eventually growing to well over 150. The two-level mall plus basement food court offered the classic late 90s/early y2k indoor shopping experience: wide corridors, a busy food court, and the full range of department stores and speciality chains. Over the decades it lost anchors one by one and vacancy rates climbed sharply. The result is now a space that still functions but often feels suspended in a long gone era.
Key features include:
- Expansive two-level enclosed mall corridors with retro design and decor
- Basement food court
- Multiple vacant or partially occupied store fronts creating a ‘dead mall’ atmosphere
- Nostalgic suburban mall layout that feels uncanny when quiet
