A luxury ‘earthscraper’ hotel built down inside a flooded quarry, 88 meters deep. Most of the rooms face the pit, with views of waterfalls, a lake, and jagged cliff faces. Whilst two floors under the waterline, including a restaurant, sit against aquarium glass. Floor numbers run the wrong way – the higher the number, the deeper into the ground you go – like in a weird dream, and the polished hotel aesthetic surrounded by the industrial wasteland, feels something like a movie. Overall, the combination of raw stone, modern finishes, copious amounts of water, and being underground whilst still looking over a lake (and a pickleball court on the roof) – creates a true sense of detachment from the world above – or, reality whatsoever.
Key features include:
- Hotel built into a former quarry
- Most floors below ground level
- Underwater/aquarium-facing rooms and restaurant
- Glass walkway on the quarry rim
- Strong “below the city & inside the earth” atmosphere
- Frutiger/Helvetica Aero aesthetic
