Fanal Forest, Madeira

LOCATION : DESCRIPTION

High in the mountains of Madeira lies a strange, open landscape populated by centuries-old laurel trees, their twisted branches stretching out like the limbs of sleeping giants; Fanal Forest looks as though it has been pulled from the pages of a fairytale. In the mist, it appears almost unreal, and dreamlike. Trees appear without warning, their dark silhouettes taking on vaguely human or creature-like forms before disappearing back into the fog.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, some of the Fanal trees are believed to predate the Portuguese discovery of Madeira in the 15th century. Their unusual shapes are the result of centuries of growth in a damp, mountainous environment, where persistent moisture encourages thick coverings of moss, lichen and other vegetation. Unlike the dense woodland normally associated with ancient forests, much of Fanal consists of scattered trees standing in open, rolling grassland. This gives each tree an almost sculptural, human-like presence. The fog is also as much of a distinctive feature as the forest itself. Situated at an elevation of approximately 1,150 metres, the forest frequently becomes enveloped in low cloud, transforming an otherwise green and peaceful landscape into something remarkably surreal. Visibility can change within minutes. A tree standing clearly on the hillside may gradually disappear, while another emerges from the mist somewhere ahead. The absence of a visible horizon makes distances difficult to judge, and the open spaces between the trees can begin to feel strangely endless, giving this particular woodland a uniquely unsettling, otherworldly feel. It is a place where nature creates its own illusions, where distance and scale become uncertain, and where every silhouette seems to hold the possibility of something waiting just beyond sight.
