Fruit Bus Stops, Route 207, Konagai

LOCATION : DESCRIPTION

The Fruit Bus Stops of Konagai are a collection of sixteen fruit shaped bus shelters scattered along National Route 207. With their oversized proportions, cartoonish colours and hollow interiors, they resemble something from a children’s book or a forgotten theme park rather than functioning pieces of public transport infrastructure. The shelters were installed in 1990 by the former town of Konagai to welcome visitors travelling through Nagasaki. Their design was reportedly inspired by the pumpkin carriage from Cinderella, and five different fruits were created: strawberries, watermelons, melons, mandarins and tomatoes.

What makes the collection so peculiar is how casually these enormous artificial fruits occupy the landscape. They are not arranged together as a conventional roadside attraction. Instead, they appear individually or in pairs along a working road. Their presence is so unexpected that they can appear almost digitally rendered into their surroundings, feeling uncanny and dreamlike. Their retro styling also gives a sense of childhood nostalgia.

The local Konagai community maintains a fruit bus stop guide with a downloadable map HERE.
The Nagasaki bus timetables can also be found HERE.
