Longyearbyen, Norway

LOCATION : DESCRIPTION

A coal town that has manged to stay on the map at 78° north: colored boxes (known as spisshus, meaning: pointy houses) against a black mountain, a single shopping street, a church, a university, and a cemetery that stopped taking the dead. For months the sun does not rise; for months it does not set.
The town is real: schools, supermarket, pub, but it sits on a ledge between harbour and glacier with nothing beyond it except tundra and bears – a combination the makes Longyearbyen feel dreamt rather than simply, remote.
John M. Longyear’s Arctic Coal Company founded the place in 1906. It has been burned, rebuilt, mined, and slowly turned into the administrative centre of Svalbard. About 2,800 people live here. The old graveyard was used until the 1950s; but the ground is frozen so hard the dead cannot be buried – leading to the famous claim that it is “illegal to die” in Longyearbyen.
Outside the settlement, polar bear country starts at the edge of the last house, requiring everyone to travel with a rifle, by law.
The vast and unforgiving landscape contrasting the colorful, childlike houses, the long empty streets with minimal conveniences, and the very real sense of local community that treats this place like home – creates an entirely unique location and atmosphere that can only be described like a threshold at the end of the world.

Attractions include:
Seed Vault – not a drop-in attraction. Exterior only on organised tours. The façade sits above the airport road, outside the polar-bear safe zone, do not walk it alone.
Mine 3 – ticketed guided tours; hours vary by season.
Svalbard Kirke (church) – generally open to visitors outside services.
Svalbard Museum – typical daytime hours in season (10:00–17:00; shorter in winter).
