Eero Saarinen’s 1962 TWA terminal at JFK, restored as a hotel: blood red carpets, stark white tube corridors, a sunken lounge, and the feeling of a departure hall that never fully emptied. The TWA Flight Center opened in 1962 as Trans World Airlines’ terminal at what was then Idlewild. Saarinen designed it as a single poured-concrete form – a bird in flight – with a vast winged roof, split-flap departure boards, blood-red upholstery and two tubular jet bridges that now lead into later hotel wings.

The terminal closed in 2001. In 2019 it reopened as the TWA Hotel, with the original headhouse kept as lobby, bar and museum space.

The Sunken Lounge sits under the split-flap board. Outside, a restored Lockheed Constellation (“Connie”) is a cocktail bar on the tarmac. A rooftop pool looks over live runways. It is both a working airport hotel and one of the most complete surviving 1960s air-side interiors in the world; when quite, the empty seating, endless corridors, and the low hum of a place built for movement, feel like somewhere between a dream and a time warp.
