Flooded limestone quarry and former prison complex where clear turquoise water has partially submerged industrial buildings, machinery and structures, creating an eerie underwater and shoreline landscape of ruins next to a stark white spoil hill. Rummu Quarry, in northern Estonia (about 40–50 km west of Tallinn), was worked for limestone and “Vasalemma marble” from the late 1930s. Prisoners from the adjacent Rummu Prison (a Soviet-era labour camp) provided the workforce. When mining and pumping stopped after Estonia regained independence, groundwater rapidly flooded the quarry, swallowing buildings, equipment and parts of the prison infrastructure. The result is a surreal lagoon of clear water filled with half-sunken and fully submerged ruins, overlooked by a large eroded spoil tip of pale limestone. The contrast between the bright, almost tropical-looking water, the stark white hill, and the silent sunken ruins creates a space that feels simultaneously industrial and strangely serene, like something from a video game.
