Sunshine Aquarium, Tokyo

A rooftop aquarium high above the streets of Ikebukuro, where soft blue lighting, transparent walkways and fish tanks sit against a backdrop of the city skyline. The contrast between the contained water world and the urban view outside produces a dreamlike experience, that gives a nod to the Frutiger Aero & Helvetica Aero aesthetics of the mid 2000s. Penguins and sea lions appear to swim against the sky, while jellyfish displays and soft, fluorescent lighting create a calm, surreal environment.

Key features include:

  • Rooftop location with city views
  • Glass tunnels and transparent walkways
  • Soft fluorescent lighting and aquatic displays
  • Strong nature-meets-urban contrast
