A full-size outdoor pool that is not a pool. From the deck it looks filled: ripples, sky, bodies standing “underwater.” From below you walk into a dry, pale-blue room and look up through a shallow sheet of water on glass. People above and people below can see each other, just like a regular pool – but nobody gets wet. Argentine artist Leandro Erlich installed the work in 2004 at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. It is one of the most circulated real-world “poolroom” images that is not a hotel basement, and gives one of the purest sensations of being able to breathe ‘underwater’, without dreaming.
